Olympus OM-D E-M1X for indoor sports

.
Thanks to Olympus Bulgaria In early February, I had the opportunity to test the new OM-D E-M1X how to handle indoor sports shooting the Sofia Open ATP250 tennis cup.

For more than 2 years, I have been constantly shooting with OM-D E-M1 II, and part of my work included extreme sports, but it was my first indoor shooting and shooting tennis in general.
As an Olympus shooter the camera and interface were pretty familiar, although many changes and improvements needed a short adaptation, and perhaps in about 1-2 hours, my camera was tuned according to my style of work.

The biggest problem was the adaptation to tennis as a sport because it is very different from everything I’ve shot. Here the action is not permanent by one person or group, but there is a transfer to two or more people and I have to watch for the ball that is constantly coming in and out of the frame with the close-ups.

Long tele photo or macro lens

In the last few months, with the coming of spring and the return to life, I began to shoot quite intensively wild animals and birds.

The combination of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II + 300mm f / 4 PRO (+ TC-1.4) offers excellent hand-held shooting capabilities, the equipment is lightweight and compact enough to be carried all day lon, and dual stabilisations that are working in sync helps for much easier framing and sharper shots, even with a teleconverter that equals 840mm equivalent to 35mm.

The bird shooting situation is such that there is plenty of waiting and searching moments, and it’s always good to have enough time to fill these pauses.

Thanks to the extremely close-up capabilities of the m.Zuiko 300mm f/4 PRO, only 1.4 meter, the lens provide great opportunities for shooting flowers, plants and insects, and I would not say that it is far from a macro lens.

Olympus 25mm f/1.2 PRO impression

Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm f/1.2 PRO is the first from new 1.2 primes that was released in 2016. I was fortunate enough to shoot a couple of events with this lens and I want to share some of my thoughts.

I’m mostly 35mm and 85mm shooter (in terms of FF) and initially I was hesitating a little bit about the new 25mm (50mm equivalent), but from the begining I was very impressed.
This lens is perfect for every event photographer shooting inside or in tight spaces. It’s great for portraits, without the distortion of the wide angle, but in the same time wide enough even for group portraits indoors.

Optically the performance of the lens is stellar, it’s very sharp even wide open and from f/2.0 reaches maximum sharpness. Flare and chromatic abberations are very well controlled as expected and there is no real weakness of the lens and it’s performance.

I can recommend highly this lens to all event, wedding, portrait and street photographers with it’s bright aperture, compact size and weather sealed construction is a no brainier.

Here are some examples most of it shoot wide open.

Poduyane railway station

Poduyane railway station was built in 1930 on a project by arch. Panayot Kalchev – one of the most prominent architects / designers of railway stations in Bulgaria. The project combines an outstanding industrial design, but also a greatly expanded civilian functionality. Although not a cultural monument, the building has a huge cultural and historical heritage.

Poduyane is a main permanent place for all travelers in southern and eastern Bulgaria and the sea side and is very close to the central eastern part of Sofia. There are hundreds of travelers passing by daily and even more on holidays.

For the past 15 years, I have traveled from here many times and I am not impressed by the total degradation that happens at the station. There are no investments in maintenance and repair, only a deterioration of the situation with years.

I hope there will be a positive development soon, and as the central station is completely renewed same to happen with Poduyane and to restore its brilliance, so it will be more enjoyable to travel with this cleaner and more economical transportation.

Olympus 45mm f/1.2 PRO impression

Last november I was very happy to touch and try for an hour a preproduction copy of the brand new Olympus 45mm f/1.2 PRO lens. The bad weather conditions and the short amount of time were a problem for some general conclusion, but I spent more time with the lens from the end of this January on.

It was my third year shooting “Surva” masquerade games and last year I used a pair of Olympus PRO zooms and the year before that it was a mix of my Olympus and Nikon gear.

For this year event I tried to use mostly prime lens including the new 25mm and 45mm f/1.2 lenses and to shoot portraits as main priority.

The location is in a city center and it’s full with street lights, trees, hanging flags and a lot of banners and I thought it’s the perfect scenario to test such lens with it’s feathered bokeh.

Gumball 3000 in Bulgaria

On June 1, just like a dream come true for most children in Sofia last Gumball 3000. Something like a race, something like an adventure or simply walk with expensive cars.
This year the rally was from London to Istanbul and Sofia was the last stop just before the final.
The event was situated just outside the main entrance of the temple-monument “Alexander Nevski” and arranged in small makeshift parking lot.

Results was a world event that happened in the Bulgarian manner, but worth seeing at least once.
